About “voices from volunteers”

Originally titled Étude 2022 for a compilation project from China Central Academy of Fine Arts. But til now one year passed, no one knows when will this compilation come out, or if this project is still continuing. So I decide to publish it on my own bandcamp page.

In December 2022, I put a call out on social media asking people to send me recording material that I could use to complete a piece. These recordings are made by their mobile phones. The content is very small sounds they make with their mouths, but they need to hold the mobile phone microphone very close to their mouths. From December 18, 2022 to January 8, 2023, I collected a total of 29 people’s recordings. I mixed these recordings in a multi-track arrangement according to a pre-planned sequence (according to recording duration). I only did some basic volume balancing in mixing process. Some people did not use mobile phone microphones as recording equipment, but they also used similar recording methods, and the results were also very satisfactory.

The volunteers were 阿岭, 虫虫, 杜一诺, 尔尼, 卡列宁, 李驰, 李诗扬, 刘洋, 术, 王道善, 王星蕴, 许绍扬, 许颐莎, 于刘晶, 张小船, 赵子毅, Andrew Fedorovich, Dgrey, Edward Sandersen, Jake Lloyd Jones, Kirill Shirokov, Pablo Casares, Peter Dowd, Raúl Garrido, Roy Duran, Shanyio, thruoutin, Tomas Gris and Tossapol Boonsinsukh.

About "voice from audiences"

Almost one year later (November 9th), I did a performance in Wujin using the same method. I invited audiences to record their mouth sound by phone and then playback. Wujin is a brunch room in Beijing, meanwhile it is the smallest performance space in that city. I like its size and people's closing together there. That day was the first day of Wujin's closing festival, and there were 30-40 audience crowded in that tiny place... yes, the venue is closed now. But Wujin will continue. Seems they will move to a new place next year.
